TIMBERMAN Decking & Flooring

Timbermann strives to provide a range of quality decking & flooring timbers at the best possible price. As such, we are constantly sourcing materials directly from a number of local mills and bulk importers.

Imported timbers are subject to numerous costly components including exchange rates, shipping & warehousing, not to mention the number of middlemen involved in the supply chain. Consequently, Timbermann advocates procurement of materials which are locally developed as far as possible.
Furthermore, Timbermann uses only SABS (Grade5) certified CCA (H3) pressure treated structural pine and CCA (H4) treated gum poles in our decking structures. This is important because these timbers hold a 25year guarantee and require no further treatment or maintenance.
This can not be said for many installers who use untreated timbers which are then painted with Creosote or the like. We have replaced a number of such decks where the structure has crumbled within 2 years!
Treatment of the deck surfaces is equally important. Timbermann subscribes to products and practices as supplied by Timberlife - a leading authority in the chemical treatment and timber preservative industry. Our decking timber treatments are not brush-on, but submerged in timber relevant preservative oils which contain insecticides, fungicides and rot inhibitors - offering the very best in protection.

Decks - Wooden Decks

A wooden deck is a useful home improvement that adds beauty and value to your home. It offers a way to expand your living area into the outdoors.

A deck is best described as a wooden platform, capable of supporting weight, typically constructed outdoors and often but not necessarily, connected to a building. Depending on its height it could be enclosed with wooden balustrades for safety.

Furthermore it provides a pleasing outdoor space for entertaining purposes.

Blending your entertainment area with one of Mother Nature 's splendid products provides a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living, especially in South Africa, where our year-round climate makes timber decks a commodity to be enjoyed during all seasons.

Not surprisingly good timber decking has become a popular addition to many South African homes; transforming bland spaces into practical and stylish outdoor amenities.

Because timber is so versatile, practically any shape, size and colour is possible, which means you can design one to suit your individual taste or budget. Decks can form part of your landscaping or be an alternative to patios by adding a romantic pergola.

Pool surroundings can be revitalised by replacing worn-out paving with a new, spunky wooden deck.

Wooden Decks & Construction

Wooden Decks

WHAT KIND OF WOOD?
There are several routes to take. First thing to decide is whether you use pressure-treated wood or not. The choice for non-pressure-treated boils down to plain wood, redwood or cedar. "Plain" wood generally means two kinds, spruce or some kind of pine. Redwood, of course, comes from California, and cedar (usually eastern white) comes from New England. Don't use plain wood. You'll replace it in six to eight years.

REDWOOD AND CEDAR
Redwood and cedar are, however, resistant to moisture and insects, but not impervious. Their resistance is variable, depending on the grade, the age of the tree and the even whether the original tree had a western or eastern exposure. Cedar is the choice if you want to stain or paint. It takes both nicely, but can also remain completely unfinished.

People with deep pockets can take the secondary path by using redwood. Remember, however, that redwood isn't meant to be structural. Actually, it's more decorative than structural, and much too soft to use for things like stair treads. And, after a few years in the weather, redwood loses it's distinctive coloring, and will look like any other wood. Before you specify redwood, check the price. Even low-grade redwood (with lots of knots) will give you a quick case of sticker shock.

THE RIGHT STUFF - (OUR TAKE)
Naturally, we think you shouldn't use ANYTHING except the proper grade of pressure treated lumber. Pressure-treated yellow pine is just about the all-around best, lasts the longest and is the most economical. Even though pine is technically a softwood, yellow pine is hard! This is what they use for stair treads - tough stuff.

CONS: Pressure treated wood is treated with arsenic and other toxic compounds and should not be used inside a structure; it doesn't take staining well; it has a tendency to "cup" or even warp; and can split if not nailed or screwed properly. For these reasons, it can present problems to contractors not used to working with it.

Wood for pressure treatment is placed in a hermetically sealed vat, then all the air is evacuated, and replaced with the preservative. The chemicals then penetrate deep into the wood. You can't dip or paint wood and get even close to the same protection.

NOW ON TO THE DECK
Let's start at the very bottom. Put in a proper foundation. Concrete pilings are the best, extended up to ground level, under each support. No termite pre-treatment necessary. The builder comes in with a giant post hole digger, drills holes in the ground and fills the holes with concrete. Build up from that, using aluminum heel plates between the concrete pilings and wooden supports. These plates will keep the joist or girder ends above the earth and moisture.

Enjoyment and adding value to your property

Timber decking in the garden can increase the enjoyment you obtain from your property. Providing that you approach the project in an organised manner, you should end up with decking you can be proud of and enjoy for years to come.

When you come to think about the site for your decking, you need to consider various aspects, the main ones are:

  • Do you want to access the decking from the house? Possibly from existing patio doors, or you may be planning to add patio doors later. If you do want access from the house, the position for the decking will determined by the position of the patio doors.
  • How big do you want the decking? This will be influenced by both the amount of room you have available and the intended use of the decking. Do you want it for entertaining friends and family, or just to sit on with a drink on summer evenings?
  • How much privacy do you want? You already have enough privacy, otherwise you may need to build a screen.
  • Is the garden flat enough or do you need to do some landscaping? On a sloping site, you can have decking with different levels.
